AN UNUSUAL VISITOR
ALBATROSS ASHORE DISCOVERY IN NELSON A few days ago an albatross was di» covered by Mr. G. Challies on his property at Appleby, Nelson. The bird, which had no doubt been blown inland by the recent gales, appeared to be quite strong, and was able to walk without difficulty. From the description given H was probably a young specimen, of the black-browned variety, its wings measuring about 7ft. from tip to tip. The bird was taken to the mudflat- and put in the water, and when last seen was swimming strongly in the direction of the Rabbit Island. However, it was thought that it was hardily likely that it would find its way back to the sea, and in any case would probably be unable to rise from tlie water. This is not the first time th.it albatrosses have been found in the district, several specimens having at'vacious times been reported. In each case the bird 6 were discovered after heavy northerly weather, having no doubt been blown up the Bay and unable to make their way back to sea against the heavy wind.
