engagement of labour PREFERENCE TO RATEPAYERS [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday Preference to .unemployed ratepayers will be the rule when labour is engaged for the proposed new drainage works. When the Hamilton Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Dr. F. D. Pinfold, presiding, the engineer, Mr. R, Worley, advised that ho had received many applications for employment on the new works. He was of the opinion that the initial requirement for employment should he capability for the work. lie suggested that ratepayers on relief should be given preference 011 condition that satisfactory arrangements were made for the liquidation of rates owing, the preference to cease when the rates were paid up. The council approved of the suggestion. Building permits issued during December amounted to £2575, compared with £11,237 for the corresponding month in 1931. _ The Waikato Returned Soldiers' Association asked that other organisations should not be allowed to sell (lowers similar to the Flanders poppy. The request was granted. Protests were made when the proposal of the Hamilton Domain Board to permit the removal of sand from the vicinity of No. 1 Bridge was discussed. It was decided to write to the Minister of Lands regarding the protection of domain lands in the borough. Speaking 011 behalf of 10 members, Mr, A. J. Denz asked the Mayor if he .would recontest the Mayoralty at the forthcoming municipal elections. Dr. Pinfold replied that ne would consider the matter.
