explosion in colliery SECOND MAN'S CRITICAL STATE (Received January 24. 9.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 24 Two miners in a colliery at Balmain ■were critically injured by an explosion of a gas "pocket." David Kerr and Henry Williams, were boring rock with a hand drill when it is presumed a spark from their hammer ignited the gas. . In spite of severe burns, Kerr dragged himself some distance to telephone to the engine-driver at the surface, 3000 ft. above. The cage descended and the injurod'men taken up and sent to hospital. Williams succumbed to his injuries later. The condition of Kerr is very critical.
