POLLING DAY

IRISH ELECTION

THE ISSUF. DOUBTFUL

[VITAL FABMEES' TOTE

CAMPAIGN HONOURS

BE VALERA SCORES /

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received January 24, 7.5 p.m.)

Times Cable LONDON, Jan. 24 Polling is taking place to-day in the general election in the Irish lyce State. Tl/e 'Dublin correspondent of tho Times emphasises the fact that the issue of the election is doubtful. On a straight vote, lie say. 1 !, Mr. Cosgrave would be assured of a working majoriy in tho new Dail, but proportional representation may produce a different result, although tho odds are 6lightly in his favour. The counting of the votes will begin to-morrow. It is expected that tho results in the small constituencies will be known in the evening, but the complete' returns will not be available until the end of the •week.

Other correspondents confirm the uncertainty of the outlook. They say none of the /'parties can forecast how the small farmers will vote.

The honours of the campaign belong to the Fianna Fail, whose publicity organisation and strategy are described as superior to Mr. Cosgrave's. Mr. de Valera, in spite of his disastrous record, has forced Mr. Cosgrave to stand on the defensive against charges of secret agreements and r.urrenders to Britain. One report says the new Centre Party Is likely to attract many farmers' votes.
