RACECOURSE FRAUD
ELECTRICITY FOR HORSES BATTERIES IN DETROIT NEW YORK. Jan. 10 The police in Detroit claim that they have taken possession of a saddle, by means of which jockeys can give their mounts "jolts" of electricity sufficient to enable them to win any race. They say they have evidence of a nation-wide plot to electrify horses into winning races. Catching two race-track frequenters, detectives took from them a suitcase in which were hidden two electric batteries and a which could be operated by a jockey's knee. The detectives found also a telegram reading:—"Four thousand dollars set for Detroit, New York, Chicago, Boston. Charm taken care of." Consulting the newspapers, the police learned that a horse named Charm had won a race at New Orleans, paying 10 to 1. Its victory was a surprise to everyone.
