MAN STRUCK BY CAR
SERIOUS INJURY AVOIDED FIRM GRIP ON HEADLAMP By holding fast fo one of the lamps of a small motor-car that struck him on the main road near Howick about 3.30 yesterday afternoon, Mr. Frederick Charles Marter, aged 52, superintendent of the Mount Albert Fire Brigade, prevented himself from beirig run over and possibly injured seriously. He escaped with a slight injury to the left knee. Mr. Marter had been to Howick to bring members of his family back to Auckland and was returning in his motorcar, when a parcel dropped on to tho road. Ho stopped to pick up the parcel and was returning to his car. when he was struck by another machine. Although the impact was severe, Mr. Marter managed to gain a firm grasp of one of the headlamps and was dragged along the road some distance beforo the small car stopped. A St. John ambulance was isummoned and Mr. Marter was taken to the Auckland Hospital. His condition l.ast evening was not serious..
