FIRE CAUSES DAMAGE
EVIDENCE OF INTRUDERS ROOM IN DOCTOR'S HOUSE An outbreak of fire was discovered in the home of Dr. J. R. Connolly at 183 Remuera Road early on Saturday morning, some hours after intruders who had been in the house had left. The fire, which caused damage estimated at about £IOO in the drawing room, was discovered when a neighbour, who knew that Dr. Connolly was on holiday, saw,-: a window open Jind informed the police. When Constable Mclnnes arrived about 10.30 a.m. he found smoke issuing from the open window, but he was successful in extinguishing the flames with buckets of water. An inspection of the room showed that the wallpaper was burned extensively and that a large armchair and the carpet had also suffered. The fire apparently started in the armchair, beneath which there was a hole burned in the floor. The room was littered with pictures, which had been broken, while there were dead matches on the carpet. Nothing had been stolen. By the time some buckets of water were obtained the flames had a considerable hold, and they were fanned by a southerly wind, but they were quenched when chemical extinguishers were also brought into play.
