SUBSIDY ON TIMBER
EXPORT TQ AUSTRALIA EXTENSION FOR TWO MONTHS A decision to extend for two months the subsidy payable on the export to Australia of ordinary building rimu and matai timber has been notified to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce by the Unemployment Commissioner, Mr. S. C. Godfrey. The chamber had written to the commissioner early in November asking whether it was true that £,he subsidy had been discontinued. In a reply dated November 9, Mr. Godfrey wrote stating that the rebate of exchange granted on exports of timber to Australia had been discontinued as from October 31. Where contracts had been entered into before that date for later export the rebate would be payable up to December 31. It was explained that the Unemployment Board considered the measure of assistance given to the building trade and indirectly to the sawmillers. through the operation of the No. 10 scheme, warranted the withdrawal of the subsidy. A later letter, dated November 18, from Mr. Godfrey, stated that after further consideration the Unemployment Board had decided to extend the subsidy to December 31. In connection with orders booked before that date for delivery until March 31, 1933, the board had decided to pay the exchange subsidy, provided that the exporters brought sufficient evidence before the board before December 31 to show that genuine contracts were in force.
