UNION OF BOROUGHS

POWERS OF COMMISSION PROTEST FROM MOUNT EDEN Proposals contained in the consolidation of the Municipal Corporations Act now before Parliament, relating to the methods of bringing about the union of adjacent boroughs, are to he discussed at a special meeting of the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association to-day. The question has already been discussed by the executive of the Mount Eden Ratepayers and Householders' Association arid tho following telegram has been sent to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. -K,. Hamilton, who has charge of the bill:— "The executive of the Mount Eden Ratepayers and Householders' Association, representing 2500 electors, emphatically protests against the proposed local body amalgamation proposals, substituting evidence before a commission for a poll of ratepayers and householders. The defeat by an overwhelming majority of the Auckland City proposals last March, in spite of an offer of lower rates, shows the undoubted desire for continuity of local control. We respectfully urge that a-poll o£ ratepayers and householders of the district affected be the sole method of deciding amalgamations."
