SWIMMING CHAMPIONS
AMERICANS FOR AUSTRALIA MAY APPEAR IN AUCKLAND Under contract to the Australian Swimming Union to make appearances at carnivals in Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania, two American swimmers, Frank Kurtz and Maiola Kalili, who carried their nation's colours at the recent Olympic Games, passed through Auckland on the j\fonterey yesterday. Kurtz, who is only 18 years old, gained third place in the high fancy divo at the Games. 110 is a student of ' the University of South California., and is an expert air pilot and claims the junior speed Hying record of the world.
The other swimmer, Kalili, is a Hawaiian, wiio.se penchant is for sprinting, but lie also possesses lino all-round qualities, lie was a member of the relay team which was placed second to Japan,at the Games. The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association has approached the Australian Swimming Union for permission for these two swimmers to tour New Zealand at the completion of their Australian contract, or, failing this, to inako an appearance at an .Auckland carnival when they return in February.
