THE GERMAN CLUB
AN ENJOYABLE CONCERT
The recently-formed German Club in Auckland celebrated its official opening with, a highly successful public concert in the Lewis Eady Hall last evening. Tho large audience was treated to a programme of great musical interest and talent, and it showed its appreciation by frequent encores. Of principal importance was (ho appearance of tho club's orchestra of 35 members, which, under the baton of Mr. Henry C. Engel, gave promise of taking a prominent part in Auckland's musical world.
Perhaps its most successful effort was Friedmann's "Slavonic Rhapsody,", in whicli the robust clima.\ was treated most effectively. Little, behind this was the ever-popular "Blue Danube" waltz, for which an encore was demanded. Another fine orchestral number was Mozart's "Mariago de Figaro" overture. Other items were the "Niehelungen March" (Wagner), the, "Raymond" Overture (Thomas), "Viennese Melody" (Gaerfcner). and the Austrian inarch, "Under the Double Eagle." The orchestra's treatment of selections from Delibes' Coppelia Ballet were also charming numbers, wliila the orchestra gave an interesting potpourri of some of the best-loved old Gey man folk songs. Tho- two vocal soloists we/o Miss Muriel Neale, who gave a sympathetic rendering of Handel's "Ombra Mai Fu," with orchestral accompaniment; and Madame Milburn, whose items were "Elizabeth's Prayer" from "Tannhauser" (\Vagner) and Kriesler's haunting "Cradle Song." A harmonious and well-balanced choir of ten voices interpreted with simplicity and charm two German folk songs. "Heidenroslein" and "Abreise," and Mr. Charles H. Hayes showqd his usual fine technique in the cornet solo "Lucille," by Percy Code. A novelty number was a series of saxophone quartets by the Regal Saxophone Four. The concert was followed by supper and dancing.
