BIG FISHING CLAN
HUNDRED OF SAME NAME The presence of nearly 100 people of the same name at a funeral in the little northern fishing port of Cullercoats recently, is a reminder of the clannishness of the Northumbrian fishing communi*ies. All along the coast from Iloly Island to Tynomouth there are villages populated virtually in their entirety by only two or three families. The funeral, which was attended by the whole of Cullercoais, was that of Mrs.. Bessy Taylor, who, when she died at tho age of 87, was head of a family which represents a goodly portion of the population of the. port. Of her direct descendants sho left six sons and one daughter, 25 grandchildren, 25 greatgrandchildren, and one great-great-giandchild. There aro not enough acceptable Christ'an names to go round among these people, but confusion is avoided by tho use of nicknames.
