THE CITY MARKETS
SPRING FRUITS FORWARD NEW POTATOES CHEAPER Most early fruits were in good supply at tho City Markets yesterday, while substantial quantities of imported fruits were also available from recent shipments. Strawberry picking is steadily increasing, and prices this week have registered a farther decline of to- 6d a chip to 2s to 2s 6d for extra choice Captain Cooks. Marguerites were steadier, easing only 3d on last week's top price to Is 6d a chip. The arrival of shipments of Island tomatoes has effected an easing in values for hothouse tomatoes, which sold down to 4d to 7d a lb., as against 6d to Is 2d a lb. last week. On the other hand, ripe bananas were insufficient for- requirements, and values advanced accordingly from 23s a case to 25s to 26s a case for best quality. Larger quantities of gooseberries were available, and easier values ruled, 6s to 9s a case _ being realised, as against the opening prices of 9s to 12s 9d a caso last week. The demand for other fruits was steady, except for lemons, which were dull of sale and easier. The firrt shipment of Canadian apples came on to the market, and sold at 20s a caso. Shipments are expected to be small this year. The supply of vegetables was heavy, especially in cabbage and rhubarb. Owing to the absorption of store stocks, Southern potatoes advanced Is a cwt. New potatoes from near Auckland districts, on the other hand, eased £d a lb. The demand generally was fair. Poultry prices were stoacty, with an average panning and a fair demand.
