PETER PAN'S GOOD WIN

IWEIGHT-FOR-AGE SUCCESS

(Received October 30. 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Oct. 30 Tho Mclbotirno Cup carnival opened at Flemington yesterday in fine weather and before a large attendance, including a number of New Zealand visitors. The Victoria Derby was brilliantly won by Liberal, who was also successful in tho (\iulfield Guineas early this week. Turbine gained a big load early but tired. Liberal was seventh at tho lurn and then eamo with an irresistible run to win by three lengths from tho solo New Zealand representative, Gaino Carrington, with Top Hole a length and threequarters further back third. Then came Ihiach, Oratory and Streperus, with Turliinu and Oro the last two. Kuvera fell at the entrance to the straight, his rider, M. McCarten, escaping uninjured. Liberal was interfered ■with as a result of the fall and proved himself a good ono by winning so well. Gaine Carrington ran a great race, but tired ov.er the last bit.

Liberal was bred by his owner, Mr. A. G. Hunter, and is trained by F. Foulsham, who had Mollison. J. Munro, rider ci Liberal, won the Melbourne Cup on the colt's sire, Windbag. Bargain Horse's Success Frotea, by the imported horse Equator, scored a comfortable win in the Wakeful Stakes, for three-year-old fillies. Eljnaros finished fast into second place «nd should win a race at the meeting. Pre tea cost only 60 guineas as a yearling and has proved a bargain, having won numerous "races.

Eapsonia led all the way in the Maribyrnong Plate and won by half a length from the New Zealand-bred colt Blixten. Tho winner is the first of the stock of Curialis to win in Australia. Steel Wings, dam of Rapsonia, is a sister to Biplane*, who was a good stake-earner for the late 3?lr. G. D. Greenwood, of Canterbury. The New Zealanders Prestige and Limareh failed to show up. The A.J.p. Derby winner, Peter Pan, enhanced his Melbourne Cup prospects by a strong finishing run that carried him to victory in the Melbourne Stakes. Rcipilla, second, and Middle Watch, third, both made good efforts. Induna was fourth. Lough Neagh gave a fair display. There were two New Zealand competitors, Peter Jackson, who showed improved form, and Compris, who disappointed. , Denis Boy's Win Denis Bay, bred and owned in Ireland, performed a good Melbourne Cup trial when lie won the Cantala Stakes in decisive style from Wincoka and Havaspot's brother, Dermid. In this race last year Denis Boy, after winning the Caulfield Cup, ran second to Dermid, finishing fast end being beaten only by a neck. F. McGrath, of Randwick, trainer of Denis Boy, previously won the Cantala Stakes twice with, Amounis, and the rider, H. Jones, had also won on Yaals. The rank outsider, Roc, won the Hot.ham Handicap comfortably from Perirtthus and Yarramba. The winner is not engaged in the Melbourne Cup. He is owned by .his breeder, Mr. E. E. D. Clarke, and is trained by the veteran J. Scobie. Two ex-New Zealanders, L. Robertson and S. W. Reid, train the second find third horses. Yarramba, a fancied cup light-weight, finished strongly.
