KARITANE HOSPITAL

PLUNKET SOCIETY VISIT DEMONSTRATION BY NURSES A fitting and interesting conclusion to the provincial conference of the Auckland branch of the Plunket Society was a visit to the Karitano Hospital which was arranged for the visiting delegates and members yesterday afternoon. On arrival the visitors, who were received by the matron, Sliss Fitzgibbon, were shown over the hospital and much interest was displayed in the babies, who were to be seen in their cots in several of the rooms and also so/ne of the stronger ones on the verandah in the sun. The perfect weather added considerably to the pleasure of the occasion and the sun, shining through the open doors and windows of the hospital, made it a very cheery and refreshing place. Afternoon tea was served in the garden, small tables and comfortable chairs having been placed under the tjees for this purpose. Of particular interest to the visitors was a demonstration given by five Karitane nurses on the bathing, dressing and general care of the normal baby. A brief talk on essentials for the health of every baby was given by one of the nurses. This was followed by a demonstration of bathing a baby, another nurse describing points in the procodure. How to make a baby's clothes and tho materials for making them was shown by a third nurse, and the demonstration concluded with an explanation of feeding the baby, either with natural food or the best substitute, and the making of a baby's cot and putting the child to bed. The demonstration was most deftly carried out by the nurses in a manner which reflected great creditboth on them and on the institution. A large number of visitors were present, including Mrs. W. H. Parkes, patron of the branch. Lady Sinciair Loekhart. acting-president, Sirs. .T. SlcGeorge (Dunedin), Sliss Hoddenott, (Dufiedin), Sirs. A. E. Harding (Dargaville), and Sirs. A. M. Bislev (Hamilton), members of the central council, and Dr. Sinrtin Tweed, of Wellington, assistant medical adviser to the society.
