Sirs. J. P. Kalaugher, of Stanley Bay, has returned from a five weeks' visit to Canterbury. ills. A. T. Cahill, of Kenny Road, Remuera, returned yesterday from a visit to Masterton. Mrs. Lawrence Ludbrook, of Dilworth Avenue, Remuera, left yesterday on a visit to Cambridge. Mrs. Somerset Thomas, of Auckland, is visiting her son, Lieutenant-Commander Somerset Thomas, in Christchurch. Miss Ruby Kennedy, of Bracken Avenue, Epsom, has returned after a two months' holiday in the North Auckland district. Mrs. Harold O'Connor, of Melbourne, arrived by the Monterey this week on a visit to her sister, Mrs. E. M. Walker, of Laurie Avenue, Pariiell. Mrs. W. Morrison and Mrs. J. Dalgleish, of Rotorua, Mrs. A. H. Lawn, of Hokitika, and Mrs. L. E. Young, of Pio Pio, aro at tho Station Hotel. Among (ho visitors staying at the Hotel Stonehurst are Misses A. and E. Evans, Miss A. Bowker, Mr. and Mrs. Wadsworth, of Christchurch, and Mrs. Evvart Brown, of Hamilton. The Mount Roskill branch of tho League of Mothers met this week, the president, Mrs. Bates, presiding. Major Gordon gave an address on tho influence of a good home in the training of young people. Musical monologues were rendered by Mrs. Roose and by Mrs. Jellio and Mrs. Schultze. A-. competition was held, the prize-winners being Mcsdamcs Kclscy and Roose. " Hiawatha's Wedding " was tho subS:t of a very interesting talk given by rs. Grace Silcock to tho Women's Progress Club (Incorporated) on Wednesday afternoon at the Higher Thought Temple, Wellington Street. The Temple Trio rendered Mendelssohn's "Wedding March." "Oriaway Awake" was sung by Mrs. Moller aqd readings were given by Mesdames Halley, Lewin and Robinson. *Afc the conclusion of this series of talks "Hiawatha" will be dramatised by Miss Spicer sometime in November in aid of the Temple's building fund. A presentation was made at the annual meeting of the Birkenhead and Northcote Orphans' Club to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Powell of a silver sandwich dish, in honour of the celebration of their silver wedding. The president, Mr. R. G. Holland. referred to the high esteem with which both were regarded by the members of the club, of which Mr. Powell had been a committeo member sinco its inception, and to which he had rendered consistent valuablo service. The members were delighted to fake this opportunity, of signifying their »ppreciation of the good work and worth of Mr. and Mrs. Powell. Visitors to the meeting of the Auckland District Federation of Women's Institutes, who were welcomed by the president yesterday, were: Miss Mowbray, president of tho Victoria League: Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane, president of the EverReady Committee; Mrs. L. S. Rickerbv, lion, secretary of tho league; and Mrs. Dudley Dorman, first president of the federation. In answer to the welcome Miss Mowbray spoke of her great interest in the movement ever since it was started, and if in any way she could help it along she would be very glad to do so. Both Mrs. Irwin and Miss Potter, secretary of the federation, were presented with bouquets from the executive committee.
