THEFT OF JEWELLERY

GOODS WORTH £IOOO ACCUSED PLEADS GUILTY OFFER TO SELL TO CONSTABLE [by telegraph—own correspondent] CriRISTCHOnCH. Thursday The theft of £IOOO worth of jewellery and watches from the premises of G. Coales and Company, Ltd., on October 8 was admitted by Gordon Webb TTuzoldino in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Ho pleaded guilty to this charge and also to two others of breaking and entering and theft. Hazeldino, who 'is 23, was described as a contractor. Jack Noville, manager for Coales and Company, said that on October 9 lie went, to tho shop and found it. had been broken into. Detectives were in possession. Iho replacement value of the stock missing was about .CIOOO. It consisted of jewellery, watches, gold and silver pencils. Witness identified tho goods produced and said that tho value of thoso not accounted for was about £2OO. Constable Walton, of Darficld, said that on October 10, jiUlt before 7 p.m., acting on instructions, ho had driven his car to the corner of Oxford Tcrraco and Kilmoro Street. Ilazcldine was near by with a parcel under his arm when witness pulled up and they began a conversation. They talked about buying jewellery. Witness represented that ho was prepared to buy. Accused then asked witness whether ho "had the chips to pay for them," but was satisfied when shown a roll of notes. Hazeldine then suggested, continued witness, that they should both go round to his house to look at some jewellery, but witness refused, and asked what was in the parcel Hazeldino was carrying. Hazeldine said it was only a dummy and threw it away. He then rodo off on his bicycle, saying that ho would return with somo jewellery. Ho carno back in about five minutes with threo parcels. Witness had a suitcaso in the back of the car and Hazeldino emptied the contents of the parcels—watches and jewellery—into it. Asked how much money he wanted for tho lot, Hazeldino replied £4OO. Constable Walton said ho then fired a shot and detectives carno up. Hazeldino then remarked that it was "a fair cop." The other three charges against accused concerned tho theft from a houso of goods valued at £37, tho theft of clothing valued at about £lB from a shop and tho theft of a suitcase containing clothing from a parked car. After evidence had been heard, Hazeldine pleaded guilty and was committed to tho Supremo Court for sentenco on all charges.
