HOSTELS FOR TRAMPERS
AUCKLAND POSSIBILITIES APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEE A meeting to consider what steps should be taken for the promotion of the youth hostel movement in the Auckland district, convened by the Alpine Sports Club, was held last evening. Professor F. P. Worley presided over representatives of various mountaineering and tramping clubs. The question arose whether there was a sufficient number of trampers in New Zealand to justify the establishment of hostels. Professor Worley stated that in the past yachtsmen had formed tramping parties of their own during the winter season, and they would probably be able to increase the numbers from Auckland. There was no particular area in view, but from Auckland to the North Cape and to the coast as far as Miranda had been suggested. On the motion of Professor Worley it was decided to appoint a committee to investigate the possibility of establishing a chain of hostels.
