STRIKE AVERTED
BELFAST TRADES UNIONS INCREASE IN RELIEF s (Received October 16, 5.5 p.m.) BELFAST, Oct. 15 The Government of Ulster announces an all-round increase in relief of 40 to 60 per cent,' and no victimisation of strikers. The Belfast corporation is to provide additional work, of which the Government Will pay half the cost. As expecied, these measures averted a general strike, "the trades unions having accepted them and cancelled the strike order. The British Labour leader, Mr. Tom Mann, attended the funeral of Baxter, victim of the recent fatal riot. Subsequently the police detained him and escorted him to a steamer. He was deported 15 hours after his arrival. Disturbances in public houses in Belfast on Thursday evening were quickly dealt with by the police. No repetition Of rioting has since occurred.
