EARTHQUAKE RECORDER
OLD GRANDFATHER CLOCK [from our own correspondent] TE AEOHA, Monday A grandfather clock, over 150 years old, owned by Mr. W. Mackie, of Herriesville, Te Aroha, is claimed by its owner to be an accurate earthquake recorder, in that it stops at the exact time the est earth-movement takes place. During the Gisborne-Wairoa earthquake tho clock stopped at 1.35 a.«fT It had recorded every other earthquake in the same manner.
The clock was made by. Mr. Mackie's grandfather, who was a clockmaker in Scotland. When Mr. Mackie visited Scotland many years ago lie endeavoured to procure a grandfather clock made by his grandfather, and had no difficulty in locating one, but the offer of purchase was flatly refused until Mr. Mackie explained who he was and the sentimental reason for which he desired the clock. Since being in New Zealand the old clock has proved an excellent timekeeper.
