ELECTRICITY SCHEME

BRITISH UNDERTAKING GREAT TRANSMISSION LINES British Wireless RUGBY, Sept. 18 Six high-pressure transmission wires which, together with earthed conductor for the protection of the others against lightning, are now to be put in position across the Thames estuary, mark an important stage l in the development of the national electricity scheme. They will connect the main lines in the east with those south of the Thames—Kent, Sussex and Surrey. The primary function of the stx conductors will be to convey current from the huge power station at Barking, on the north of the Thames, to a switching station whence it will be fed to the south-eastern counties. The steel towers, between which, the 1000 yds. long conductors will stretch across the river from Dagenham, in Essex, to Crossness, in Kent, are 487 ft. high but in the centre of the span the conductors, each of which weighs 2Q tons, will, dip to a height of about 250 ft. above high water-mark—high above the masts of the tallest ships.
