ECONOMY PROPOSAL

DOUBLE USE FOR POLES TELEPHONE AND POWER LINES "Economy "could be effected by this means," said Mr. S. E. Kennings at a meeting of the Wait.emata Electric-Power Board yesterday, in suggesting that for future telephone and electrical extensions the board, should seek the co-operation of the Post and Telegraph Department in order that only one set of poles should be used. At the present time two sets of poles were used, one for telephone and telegraph lines, and the other for power lines. The double set meant that there was a large amount of expenditure, and money was going out of the country. At Whangarei there had been co-operation between the Post and Telegraph Department and the power board. The engineer, Mr. F. J. H. Wilson, said there would be interference from high tension lines. A better insulated wire would have to be used by the power board if both wires were to be put on the one pole. It was only in recent years that the department would consider the question of allowing power lines to run on -the same poles as the telephone wires. The suggestion will be investigated by the engineer.
