THE MAUI POMARE

CHANGE IN CONTROL [by telegraph—special reporter] WELLINGTON, Monday Control of the Government motor vessel Maui Pomare has been transferred from the Cook Islands Department, of which Sir Apirana Ngata is minister in charge, to the External Affairs Department, which is administered by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes. Explaining the reason for the change Mr. Forbes said this evening that the vessel had been in the charge of a department for which it did practically no work, and it was deemed advisablo to bring it under the direct control of the Department of External Affairs. The Maui Pomare was now exclusively engaged in the banana trade between Western Samoa and Niue Island and New Zealand, and for that purpose Niue Island had been brought under the administration of tho External Affairs Department. "By having direct control of the vessel we hope to bo able to suit trade requirements better," added Mr. Forbes.
