DOUBLE TAXATION

PLEA FOR ABOLITION

The principle of substituting income tax for land tax was endorsed by the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce at a meeting in Wellington last week, consequent upon the receipt of representations on the subject from the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. It was decided to convey to the Prime Minister the opinion of the executive that the present position with regard to the payment of land tax in addition to income tax upon rents, collected from property in respect of which land tax had been paid was in effect double taxation. Land tax, it was urged, should be abolished in favour of income tax, which was in all cases the more equitable system of taxation.
