OPOTIKI INTERESTS

RUST'S ISLAND RENAMED [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] OPOTIKI, Thursday The Opotiki Borough Council has decided to rename Rust's Island Volkner's Island, thus commemorating the name of the Rev. Carl Volkner, who met his death at the hands of rebel Maoris many years ago. The island is being connected with the mainland by a bridge, which the council is building with unemployed labour, and will be turned into a pleasure report, with football and cricket grounds. The council decided to refuse to remit rates on the property occupied by the Mechanics' Institute and the Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
