UNIVERSITY BURSARIES

HIGHER TEST REQUIRED i LIMITATION, OF AWARDS The new basis, introduced by Order-in-Council, of granting bursaries to students entering universities is not viewed with much favour in educational circles in Auckland. Whereas, in the past, bursaries have been awarded to applicants who qualified for the higher leaving certificate or passed with credit in the entrance scholarship examination, now they will be granted to candidates selected in order of merit according to the university entrance scholarship examination.

It is estimated that there are between 250 and 300 bursars at the Auckland University College every year. The new system of awards is bound to have the effect of greatly reducing this number, and apart from the hardship this will impose upon students without means, it may seriously affect the finances of the college through reducing the number of students taking lectures. Candidates for bursaries will have to attain a much higher standard than the former one and unless a man is exceptionally talented there will be little chance of him qualifying.
