BOWLING NOTES
PENNANT COMPETITION QUOTAS AND, PROSPECTS „ BY SKIP With the approach of the summer bowling reason attention is now turning to the pennant competition. The. same number of players as last season, namely, 1152, will again be catered for. It is pleasing to note the re-entry of Manurewa, but it is to be regretted that the EUerslie Club has dropped out on the score, it is said, of a heavy home programme of events. Quota cfianges reveal a pleasing feature in the raising of seven clubs, while only four have been reduced. The following clubs have gone up two rinks: —Carlton, Auckland, Waitemata, Mount Albert, Takapuna and Rawhiti. Tho Glen Eden Club supplies an extra rink, making its quota three rinks, which is the same rating as the newcomer, Manurewa. It is the first time an uneven number of rinks has been allocated, but the apparent difficulty has been overcome by the insertion of a definite note as to whether the clubs will have two rinks at homo or one away or vice-versa. The Epsom, Grey Lynn, New Lynn and West End clubs have been reduced two rinks apiece. The Carlton Club still holds pride of place as the most highly-burdened, but 24 rinks are not by any means a serious obstacle. The next highest handicapped club is Auckland with four rinks less than Carlton. Tho Rawhiti Club is to be congratulated on its acceptance of a 10 rinks burden. Here is the case of a club endeavouring to givo as many of its members as possible a game in the pennant competition.
On this occasion the authorities directly concerned "with the compilation of tho pennant programme have Been confronted with a hard task on account of varying memberships caused by the difficulties of the times, but tho work has been done in tho usual finished style. The scheme of playing the whole five rounds olf prioi to "the Christmas holidays should prove successful if not interfered with by bad weather conditions. In view of the quolas which have been allotted to eacli club so as to make them equal, it is difficult to select those with the best chances of success. It seems likely that the top markers in both sections will have to give way to the small or medium-weighted clubs. _ In section A both the winner, Stanley, and runner-up. Mount Albert, of last season's competition appear. Ihe former has again a good chance. Papatoetoe, in view of the big cluli's heavy quotas, stands an excellent chance. Of the medium-weighted clubs Epsom's prospects with 12 rinks also seem good. If Manurewa gains a good start against Carlton in tho first round then some trouble may bo expected in that quarter. In section B New Lynn has a great chanco considering the very small quota and the prominence of some of its players. West End, with 10 rinks, also appears difficult, while Otahuhu, always a consistent performer, should bo well in the running. Rocky Nook appears to have the best chance of the medium-quota clubs. Hallyburton Johnstone's chances, too, are fairlv bright. The Denison Pins match, played at Carlton ? on Saturday between the holders, Waitemata, and Balmoral, was a very close game. Blackwell played a nice running shot to pick out the Balmoral shot bowl for four points, which gave his side a lead of two with one head to go. The next challenger is A.. C. Farley, Rocky Nook. There was no came for the Edwin Stars. The next challenger is Gardiner, Otahuhu. " The match between business men of Queen Street and Karangahape Road to be played on Saturday at Epsom has drawn the fine response of 18 teams a-side. Two important engagements for Saturday week are the Grammar Old Boys' match at Remuera and tho postponed Oddfellows' match at Epsom. The Mount Eden Club will commence a two-Saturday afternoon tourney on September 24.
