SPORT OF CYCLING

ROAD RACES FOR AMATEURS LALOLI'S GOOD PERFORMANCE DOUBLE HONOURS FOR JUNIOR Fifty amateur riders competed in the two road races decided last Saturday by the Auckland Cycling Centre. The conditions were exceptionally severe, a strong westerly wind and light showers making the senior race a thorough test for the riders. This event included 22 miles of loosely metalled road surfaces.

The senior contest over 40 miles of undulating roads, extending from Western Springs to Ktimcu and back, drew a field of 34 riders. The most strongly represented club was Manukau, with 20 starters, Auckland having eight, Takapuna five and Papatoetoe one. Only 15 riders completed the course before the time limit of 2h 40m had expired.

A popular and deserving win was scored by S. J. Baird, of the Manukau Club, who had 3m start. In every road event conducted by his club during the past two seasons Baird has been a competitor. I. C. Laloli, of the Auckland Club, proved fairly conclusively that he is the best distance rider in Auckland at the persent time when he finished only half a length behind Baird to gain fastest time in 2h Om Is. Laloli rode from scratch with 11. V. Gordon, L. H. Dwight and M. P. Byrnes. Laloli and Gordon were successful In riding away from the other two scratch riders on the outward run to Kumeu, but at Henderson, eight miles from the finish, Gordon's front tyre deflated, and this robbed the event of great interest. From Henderson Laloli and Baird lapped together. Laloli holds the record for the course in lh 57m 30s. • * E. Raper, 10m, who had just transferred from the junior ranks of the Manukau Club, lodo surprisingly well to finish, third in 2h 10m 57s Fourth to finish was H. V. Gordon, scr, who was fortunate enough to obtain another cycle shortly after his tyre deflated. His time was 2h 3m 235. The Manukau Club's team, S. J. Baird, H. V. Gordon and L. H. Dwight, won the club's challenge shield. The junior championship over 23 miles, from Western Springs to Swanson and back, was run while the seniors were on thoir 40 miles journey. The double victory scored by the scratch junior of the Manukau Club, J. R. Hall, was antici- t pated after his splendid ride in the 31 miles' race the previous week at Papatoetoe, when he won from the 4m 30s mark, competing against senior riders. Hall has had five wins this year. His time was 69m 255.
