TARIFF PROBLEMS
CONSEQUENCES OF OTTAWA REQUEST BY MANUFACTURERS A statement that Mr. G. W. Reid, of Dunedin, the representative of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation at tho Ottawa Conference, would probably address the Auckland Manufacturers' Association on his return to the Dominion, was made at a meeting of the executive yesterday. The vice-president, Mr. F. N. Ambler, who presided, said the date of the expected meeting would be October 3. Several remits dealing with tariff questions were submitted by the executive and finance committee, to be forwarded to tho annual conference of manufacturers' associations at Wellington. It was suggested that, before any tariff alterations were made as a result of the Ottawa Conference, the Government should be asked to allow manufacturers an opportunity to discuss the position. Mr. J. A. C. Allum considered that a special meeting should be called to consider the results of the Ottawa Conference, and that New Zealand manufacturers should be prepared to discuss any tariff proposals. The Chairman: I believe it would be wiser to know what the Government proposes to do. We should wait until our own delegate returns and the official delegates bring their proposals forward. There is no suggestion yet of tariff alterations. The remit was approved. Other remits suggesting that, in all matters affecting the alteration of tariffs, the evidence of all parties should be taken in public, and that, in the event of any tariff reduction, ample notice should be given to the interested parties, were carried. It was reported that the delegates to the annual conference in Wellington would be the president, Mr. S. Takle, Mr. Ambler, and the secietary, Mr. J. Findlay.
