DOMINION HEMP

NEED OF AN ENGINEER MECHANISING THE INDUSTRY LONDON, Sept. 1 The Imperial Economic Committee s report on hemp fibres recommends the New Zealand Government to consider the appointment of an engineer to deal with the machinery used in the industry. The possibility of further mechanising the industry should be explored, says the report, and a station should be established for the conduct of cultural experiments to demonstrate the results to millowners.

" Naturally, anything that will improve the fibre of the flax will enable the manufacture of a better article, ' said an Auckland authority yesterday. He added that the more extensive use of machinery should give that better finish. As far as New Zealand's domestic requirements were concerned the demand was not ficienfc to keep all the mills going, and it appeared that the recommendation regarding the greater use of machinery was based on the possibility of increasing production and improving the quality for export. Jn its broad implications the recommendation was to bo cordially welcomed.
