OLD MAORI SKULL FOUND
DUG OUT OF DEEP PIT DISCOVERY IN PUMICE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHUIICH, Friday A skull, thought to be that of a Maori, was found in a sack of pumice at Vale and Company's works this morning. The pumico came from the firm's pit alongside tiie Wanganui River and was taken from a depth of many feet. OTHER HELIOS RECOVERED THEORY REGARDING ORIGIN [by telegraph—own correspondent] WANGANUI, Friday Pumice is being taken from a pit at Aramoho, near (he liver, and the skull found in a sack of pumico at Christchurch is not the first relic to be discovered at this point. The pumico is being laken from 18ft. below tho surface, and largo lumps are consigned south. Near the pit is a Maori burial ground, where there are a few graves, but that ground has not been touched. It is thought that skulls found in the pumice pit were brought down by the river. This theory is strengthened by the fact that no other bones have been found at this point. The skulls are well preserved but very old.
