SMALL TAXI-STANDS
SYSTEM IN SYDNEY MAYOR'S COMMENDATION Tho practice in Sydney of sotting apart single-cab taxi-stands at frequent intervals in tho business area was mentioned by tho Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison,.at tho City Council meeting last evening as worthy of consideration in Auckland. Mr. Hutchison said that on his recent visit to Sydney ho had been impressed with tho plan. Each stand was provided with a telephone call-box, and when tho cab in attendance was summoned another quickly took its place. If more than one cab was allowed on the stand tho second cab moved up in place of the first. The plan avoided congestion in busy streets and provided a large number of stands, which was advantageous to tho public. It seemed to him that with tho growth of street traffic in Auckland it would bo necessary before long to consider somo other method than tho allocation of stands for six or more cabs each.
Tho matter was brought up by a complaint from the Transport Board that the taxi-rank in the, centre of Newton Road made it difficult for the board's towerwaggons to enter and leave the depot.
Tho deputy-chief traffic inspector, Mr. E. Bland, reported that he had received similar complaints from business people iri the neighbourhood, lie recommended that a portion of the stand be. removed to the south side of the road and that the cabs be permitted to face Symonds Street, The report was adopted.
