SYDNEY RACING NEWS

DOINGS OF NEW ZEALANDERS HISTORIC'S FINE VICTORY AUTOPAY IN GOOD FORM [FROM or It OWN CORRESPONDENT] SYDNEY, Aug. 2G H. B. Lorigan had a welcome turn of fortune's wheel at Canterbury Park last Saturday when Historic won ih© principal handicap and Might dead-heated for first Inter in the day. It was real encouragement for Mr. Riddiford's venture on the Australian turf and his local representative, Mr. Douglas Cook, was able to send him an entirely satisfactory report. Historio had a great run throughout the race and shouldered his lOst like a tradesman. He was not bothered as much as expected by the small track and came round the turns well. It was only in tho last few (strides that he collared Flinders, and his long head stuck out prominently at the post. Might probably was unlucky not to secure a straight-out verdict in the second division of the Three and Four-year-old Handicap. He was handy to the leaders to the turn and had charge a little less than a furlong from home. He then weakened a little and Heroic's Hope flashed up on tho rails. Might having: veered out into the centre of the course as he tired. The judge awarded a dead-heat, a, decision not popularly approved. Historic started at quite a fair price and even when Might's price was halved, it. was fair, too. Their sl.ablemate Forestry had his first run at Monangle on Tuesday. He was green at the start, but throughout the race gave every indication that he will not be long off the winning list.

Quick Return lor Oockpen A few days ago Lorigan sold Cockpen to a pony patron, who had a quick return for the 100 guineas expended. Cockpen was produced in the first division of a maiden handicap at Victoria Park on Wednesday and at no stage was in danger of defeat. His starting price was satisfactory. Ko New Zealand horse at Randwick is going betiier than Autopay. His half-mile yesterday in 50js was brilliant, especially as with IMcCarten up he carried 9st. C. Pritchard has him well forward and his condition should stand to him in his immediate races. A. D. Webster had three runners at Canterbury Park on Saturday. Hunt the Slipper and Bayaore showed up well enough to say that a winning turn for them is not far away. Bayacre is still something of a handful at the barrier, but has improved. Hunt l.he Slippnr was ridden by an apprentice in his ra;:e. but next time probably there will be a change of riderß. The Paladin mare Stalely is getting ready for a middle-distance race. She was among the sprint en s at Canterbury Park and was noticed putting in good work at the end of the six furlongs. R. Reed rode both Historic and Might at Canterbury Park and finished second on Oratorian. Rather belatedly some of tho Local critics are now of opinion that ho is finite a good rider. Reed's average here is particularly good, for he has had. few mounts arid a large percentage of places. Oratorian was unlucky enough to strike the speedy_ N.E.F. in the second division of the Plying Handicap. N.E.F. set up a big lead and when trying for a run through on tho rails at the turn, pratorian was hampered. Once clear,' lie finished well, but N.E.F. had too great an advantage. Sunny Sky and Manawhenua Oratorious was a starter in the race won by Might. He disappointed C. Emersou, for he hardly 6howed the expected pace, and ran wide ut tho first turn. From that point he was out of the race. Sunny Sky pull»d hard when racing out in front in the Canterbury Handicap and with her 0.2 she was finished with at turn. A chance was missed when she was not started in tho Flying Handicap earlier in the day, s race which would have suited her better at this stage. Manawhenua improved a good deal from week to week to finish third in the Canterbury Handicap. His poor showings a week earlier st Menangle and Rosehill were found to b»> due to kidney trouble. He was effectively treated for this and gave quito a fair display. King March still finds some supporters here, in .spite of constant defeats, Saturday nt Canterbury adding'still on© more to the list. He >s coming down in the weights, but is still handicapped above his capabilities.

J. T, Jamieson retrieved the family fortune at Canterbury Park when Persian won at very good odds. He had to withstand a protest for interference, but really the runner-up. Captivation, contributed more to the bumping, which was very slight, by hanging out. Persian is useful without being top class. "■ (Jaino Carrington's Rider Prince Pombal made a gallant but unsuccessful attempt, to win with 9.6 at Menangle on Tuesday. J.'McLaughlin feared that he might just need the race and so it proved, for oyer the last 100 yardii 'ha veered out. and was beaten by the more-i seasoned Magpie mare Brunette, 7.11. Brunette is useful, so that under the stances Prince Pombal did Well. "Waratah failed again at Menangle,. running just a fair race. He is a puzzle, for he gallops _well on the track at Randwick, but races indifferently. ; Those who liave been paying close attention to Gaine Cofrrington are not so keen on him as they were. Another week hafi gone by and neither he nor Peter Jacknon has done any work fitting candidates fou important events. This would suggest that J. Fryer is not too satisfied with them. R. Reed has been engaged to rid<s Gaine Carrington in the Derby now that A. E. Ellis has again placed himself; out of court. Inflation has had,two solid gallops at Randwick this week, He was 'with older horses." Nightmarch and Concentrate, and di<J not shape over-well with them. His "War* wick Stakes effort is now being awaited to sea how he shapes in public as an indication whether he has really lost form a little.

NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP A. E. Ellis, who broke an arm when Snowfall came to grief in the Lincoln Steeplechase, is well on the way to recovery. After a short dojourn in the hospital he is back at home, and he expects to have the splints ofF kis arm by tho end of this week. The three-year-old Early Cup, by Tea Tray from Bonny Dawn, who was included in the team taken to Australia by C. Emerson, waa, sold at auction in Sydney last week for 55 guinea 3. Early Cup was showing promise, but displayed signs of unsoundness after galloping one morning recently and it was decided to sell him. Right Bower, who is engaged in the Karere Hack Handicap at .Awapuni on Saturday, performed fairly consistently in minor company last season, notching two win.3 and two seconds in seven starts. His last success was achieved in tho Shorts Hack Handicap at Ha',Vera in May and a repetition of that form should give him a chance in his coming engagement. Two of -T. T. Jamieson's horses. Timorous and Dervish, were submitted at auction in Sydnev iast week. Timorous, by Chief Ruler from Timid, was passed in at 150 guineas, ancl Dervish, by Brazen from Warwhoop, was quitted at GO guineaß. Jamieson must have been disappointed with Dervish, who cost him 180 guineas as a yearling in Sydney- ....... TRAINER'S ILLNESS [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Wednesday C'.
