SPRING RACING

JUVENILES TO BEGIN FIELD IN MARTON PLATE AUCKLANDERS ENGAGED DINELLI AND PELAGIA BY ARCHER .For some vcar s past the Wanganui Jockey Club has provided the first race of the season for two-year-olds in New Zealand, but. this season it has been deprived of the honour by the Marton Jockey Club, which has included on the programme for its spring meeting on Saturday week the Juvenile Plate. The race is restricted to two-year-olds, colts and geldings to carry 8.5, and fillies 8.0, and the distance is for: furlongs. A good entry of fifteen has been received and there are some very interesting youngsters in the field. Auckland has two representatives, Dinelli and Pelagia, and their presence should give the cor.'test more than ordinary interest for northern sportsmen. Dinelli, trained by A. Cook, at Te Awamutu, i s a bay filly by Diacquenod from the speedy Finelli. Dinelli's breeding suggests that she will come to hand ear'Jy and, -as sho has been shaping well in her work, she may be capable of a bold bid for winning honours. Pelagia, by Chief Ruler from Rapture, i 5, a full-sister to the Maribyrnong Plate winner, La Justice, so that she too is bred for early speed. The filly was for & time in A. E. Xeale's stnblo fit Bulls, W Mr. F. Bristol, who purchased her for 70 guineas at the Trentham yearling sales, passed her on to Mi*. E. Dent in June, and she is now trained by J. W. Cathro at Te Awamutu. Track reports credit Pelagia witli possessing a nice turn of speed and she is likely t.o give a good account of herself also. Half-brother to High Finance

The colts engaged comprise Hugo, by Nigger Minstrel—Pleasure, Midian, by Weathervane —Eebekah, and Colossian, by Colossus—Sanguinaria, while there are two geldings, Raparahara, by Lackham— Truney, and Royal Guy, by Royal Hivorce —Panette. is a Mf-brother to Playground and Santoft, anci Midian, who belongs to the Wanganui trainer, W. H. Dwyer, is a halt-brother to High Finance, Anthonie and Rachel, the dam of Rabbi and Kozan. Midian's dam, Rewas a brilliant marc, and her 4i?lf-sister, Fleeting, is the dam of Inflation.

) Colossian is a half-brother to Rosy Morn and he belongs to the same family as Royal Blood and Huntingdon, his dam being a half-sister to the former. RaparaHara is bred for early speed, but, Royal Guy has more of a staying pedigree, and be may take longer to mature. Royal Guy's dam, Panette, was by Panmure the Martian mare Mouette. .•M- Lady Cavendish's Daughter

Besides Dinelli and Pelagia, there are also soma nicely bred youngsters among the fillies. Princess Doreen is a chestnut filly by Chief Ruler from the Lucullus mare Doree, who was from Desert Gold's sister, D'Oro. Thi s filly was reputed to be very smart when trained at Hastings for the late Mr. W. G. Stead, and L. Wilson has her well forward to carry the colours of her new owner,, Mr. S. E. Hill, of Wellington. Golden Hair is a chestnut filly by Limond from the Absurd mare Lady ,Cavend'sh, a half-sister to Rercmoana, 7 and a fuli-sister to Lady Bentinck, the dam of Belvoir and Topthorn. She is undoubtedly. bred to go fast, and so is 'Bon Rapide, by Chief Ruler from the Polygnotus mare Rapide. Others in the field are Gipsy Love, by Hunting Song from Mountain Signal, Boudoir, by Lord Quex from Oddity, Wyndale, by Rossendale from Kilbreeze, and After Money, fry Paper Money from Afterglow.

CYLINDER'S BRILLIANCY // ~ A GALLOP WITH AMMON RA [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] SYDNEY. Aug. 26 J. H. JefJerd has this week Riven Rand*ick track-watcher 3 an idea of CylinJer'a class. On the tan on Tuesday morning, with * 6st boy in the saddle. - Cylinder alone /careered ovor si* furlongs in 1.15. The tan is a fast track, tut it was an outstanding gallop. Yesterday R. Reed rode Cylinder and M. McCarten was on Amnion Ra in a six furlongs gallop on the crass. Amnion Ra had the advantage for the 6rst half-inile in 525, but then Cylinder asserted himself to win th« gallop by half a length in 1.18. Neither /Was flat out,_ but Aiumon Ra did not finish . well, and his performance did not. please some of the critics. He is heavily shod and probably iome escuse can be made. -'Cylinder certainly Galloped well each morning and Jefferd should win his share of races here with him. He looks and goes like a good horse and is well forward. SUCCESS AT FLEMINGTON NEW ZEALAND-BRED GELDING [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] MELBOURNE, August 23 . The New Zealand-bred gelding Slylook, by Tea Tray from Bo Peep, easily won the August High-weight' Handicap at Flemington last Saturday. Slylook is raced by Messrs. A. and J. H. Glenn lind cost only 100 guineas as a yearling.
