The 800 th anniversary of the* foundation of Fountains Abbey, near Ripon, Yorkshire, was celebrated yesterday, when a congregation of 6000 people, including the Duke and Duchess of York, attended a service of joint religious denominations in the Abbey.
The Bishop of Ripon, Dr. E. A. Burroughs, said: "To the England of the 12th century—a century of great Abbey builders —new inspiration and unity and a sense of freedom came on the wings of a widespread spiritual revival. So may it be in the England of the 20th century."
