THIEF ACTIVE IN CITY
FIVE SHOPS ENTERED
karangahape road area
Five shops in Karangahape Road were entered on Tuesday evening by a thief. A thorough search of the premises was made in each case, but only about £3, from one shop, was secured. Four of the shops entered are in one block and the fifth is some distance away, but there is every reason to believe that the same man, thought to be the thief chased by the manager of a Queen Street shop on Monday evening, was responsible. The premises of G. E. Head and Son, opticians, D. Simpson and Son, painters, H. E. Buckley, land agent, and L. McDonald, home cookery, from 167 to 175 Karangahape Road, were all entered from a balcony at the rear. The thief used a box and an iron pipe to reach the balconv, and then tried the windows of the various shops in the block, some of which he left untouched. At Read's premises he turned out several drawers, stealing £3, but leaving a number of pennies. The other premises were ransacked but nothing was stolen, a search for money only being indicated. The fifth shop, that of W. Dickinson, ladies' hairdresser, St. Kevin's Arcade, was entered through a light well. The thief found it easy to get to the bottom of the well, and he climbed some iron piping and opened a window giving access to the shop. A search of the premises gave him only a few pennies. The shop was broken into about a month ago, but nothing was stolen.
