EUia odded further to his notable record of successes at Grand National meetings at Riccarton. Ho had his fir3t mount in a Grand. National Steeplechase in 1921, when Galway was beaten, but completed the course. Jn tljo following year Maghera was unequal to getting a place, but got round safely, while Penury Rose, in the hurdles, was a winninj Tho big prizes eluded Ellis at his next National, but in 1927 ho nearly pulled off the treble. Peter Maxwell, who had won (ho steeplechase with R. W. McTavißli up, the previous year, was second to Beau Cavalier, Solferite won tho Winter Cup as seventeenth favourito, nnd Wharncliflo won the' hurdles. . Tn 192S Ellis rodo Tuki, who secured third placo in the steeples: in 1930 he piloted Toxcnma to victory in the Winter Cup, and blfo won a hurdle raco on Gay Fashion. Twelve months ago Snowfall proved a good thing in the steeples, but Svhen Mako Up fell in tho hurdles Ellis received severe injuries that kept him out of tho saddle for somo months. RETIREMENT OF MOQRBIRD The nix-year-old maro Moorbird, by The Aco from Mporfowl, lias been purchnsod from tho estate of the lato Mr. E. S. Lultrell by Messrs. E. O. McCullough and F, D. Jones, of Riccarton. She was a speedy galloper, who might liavo reached good class if sho had been sound. Sho will bo retired to the stud and may bo muted thiß season with British Empire, a Sunstar horse who is quartered in Southland.
