FRAUD ON ORCHARDISTS
TERM OF IMPRISONMENT
SENTENCE OF 18 MONTHS
Sentences amounting to 18 months' imprisonment with hard labour -were passed on George Cooper Jackson in the Supreme Court yesterday by Mr. Justice Herdman. Jackson, whose age was stated by the police to bo 55, gave his own age as 61. Ho was found guilty on Monday on four charges of obtaining credit by fraud from orchardists. His counsel sai'd he was an old man, in ill-health, and had not been convicted of any seriojs offence since 1921. His Honor said the unfortunate men whom Jackson had duped had probably lost the greater part of their crop for the year. He had been convicted many times of minor offences. He would be sentenced to 12 months* imprisonment for the fraud on Cole, and to six months' imprisonment for the fraud on Marinovich, these sentences to be cumulative. On each of the other two charges ho would be sentenced <3 one month's imprisonment, theso periods to be concurrent with the other sentences.
