"HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER"
FINE OF £5 IMPOSED
SEQUEL TO COLLISION
A collision between two motor-cars in Queen Street oil July 22 resulted in the prosecution of one of the drivers, John William Bew, in the Police Court yesterday, on a charge of failing to stop his car and give his name and address, and other necessary information, to the police. Defendant did not appear in Court. Mavis Isabel Seed said that on July 22 she was driving her motor-car across Queen Street into Victoria Street hast, when another car, driven by defendant, came up Queen Street and crashed into tho front left mudguard of witness' vehicle. After tho collision defendant drove on without saying anything to witness. Evidence was given by two eyewitnesses to tho collision that defendant's car approached tho intersection at a fairly fast speed and mado no attempt to stop. "Defendant has not appeared in Court to offer any excuso," said the magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, in imposing a fine of £5, and costs, £2 6s. "Tlieso 'hit and run' drivers do not deserve any consideration," ho added.
