NEWMARKET BOROUGH
CONCRETING TWO STREETS
PROPOSAL TO RAISE LOAN
The Newmarket Borough Council decided last evening to arrange a poll on a proposal to raise a. loan of £4625 for surfacing with concrete two roads in the borough. The roads to be paved arc Carlton Road, between Victoria Crescent and Park Road, at an estimated cost of £3650, and Huntly Avenue, £975. The annual sum necessary to meet interest and sinking fund charges will be £3OO, making necessary a special rate of 3-5 d in the pound. "I think the Newmarket borough is to be complimented on the promptness with which the rates are being paid," said the Mayor Mr. S. Donaldson. The fact that the receipts during July wero higher than for the corresponding period last year, when a lower rate of discount was allowed, made the position even more satisfactory. Bates collected in July amounted to £9519, or 55 per cent, of the total. The sum included £360 for arrears. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £6855. A request from the Auckland Automobile Association that the council should reconsider its decision against tho removal of a pole at the coiner of Bark and Carlton Goro Boads, and the cutting back of the corner was declined. "The name Park Avenue has stood for 50 vears, and tho suggested change to Penzance Street should be strenuously opposed," stated a petition signed by 13 residents of the road. It was decided to support the petition.
