AUCKLAND FIRE CONTROL
METROPOLITAN , SCHEME SUPPORT BY ONE TREE HILL The proposal to form a metropolitan firo board in Auckland was supported bv the One Tree Hill Borough Council at a meeting last evening, when the principle was approved and consideration of the allocation of costs deferred. The Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, said that while the proposal might not at first appear to bo in the interests of the district, there were no arguments against it except on the ground of cost. The amount the borough would be called upon to pay would be about £2OO more than was paid at present to the Auckland Fire Board, but the agreement with the city board expired in 1934 and it might not bo possiblo to rearrange such an advantageous one "We have to look at the question not only from the monetary point of view, but from the view of efficiency," continued tho Mayor. "The scheme would mean that tho area would be served by brigades all round it. I am informed that if the scheme comes into force a new station will be erected in Great South Road, and then the furthermost point in tho borough could be reached by a brigade within two" minutes. Tho increase in the cost would be only £2OO a year and one fire would cost more than that." The clerk, Mr. A. Leese. said that when interest on the boroughs alarm sjstem wai allowed, tho proposed cost to the borough would be £645 a year, compaied with £SOO at present. The principle of forming a Metropolitan Fire Board was affirmed by the Mewmarket Borough Council last evening.
