UNEMPLOYMENT TAXES

INSTALMENTS NOW DUE SLOWNESS OF PAYMENTS LATER CONGESTION FEARED Payment of the unemployment taxes which were duo on August 1 is still very slow and at no timo during the past 10 days has tho staff at the special bureau on the second floor of tho chief post office been overtaxed. Tho payments which aro duo aro the quarterly levy of 5s and the second instalment of the emergency charge on incomes other than salary or wages for tho year 1931-32. Tho rate at which payments are being made is below that experienced by the staff when tho last quarterly payments were being received, and it is feared that tho reluctance of taxpayers to pay an early visit to the bureau will result later in tho month in congestion and annoying delay to the public. Although spacious office accommodation has been provided and an expert staff is in attendance, thero is a limit to tho number of clerks who can operate at one time, so that when queues begin to form, members of tho public will find that it will take longer to make their payments. It is thought that many of the publio may be misled by tho fact that tho last coupon in their book is marked September, whereas the payment has to bo mado during August. This apparent anomaly is due to tho fact that when the amount of the quarterly levy was reduced from 7s 6d to ss, the date of payment was made one month earlier, and it was decided to make use of the old coupons until tho books were used up. It is thought that payments may be speeded up after to-morrow, which will bo tho second pay day for the month. Penalties will be imposed on those who do not make tho payments by the end of August. Officers at the central bureau stated yes. terday that in some cases taxpayers were failing to bring with them tho receipt for the payment of the previous instalment of the emergency charge. Unless this is presented for examination taxpayers will bo required to fill in another declaration of income.
