THE SIMPLE LIFE
HEADMASTER'S EXPERIMENT COTTAGE AND THREE ACRES A striking experiment is to be attempted by Mr. C. F. C. Padell, headmaster tri the Carlisle Grammar School, who has just retired. T'u is the intention of Mr. Padell to reside in a little Berkshire cottage and with his wife try to live on what three acres of land can produce in the way of fruit and vegetables. He will probably be the family cobbler also, while his wife, who has practised handloom weaving, will endeavour to provide their needs in the way of clothing. Mr. Padell, who had been headmaster of the ancient Grammar School, nearly 1250 years old, for 20 years, recently stated ( that he grew a beard after he discovered that over a certain number of years he had wasted so many weeks of his life in shaving. A strict vegetarian, he sayg he believes that a " land diet" can in many cases be th® foundation of health and strength, and also added life to those who suffer materially from nature's ills. As yet Mr. Padell has not determined on how little money he can live under such circumstances, but he says he firmly believes that two acres of land are sufficient to provide the food requirements of a group of four persons if cultivated properly. " There is far more nourishment in fresh fruit, nuts and uncooked vegetables, except potatoes, than any amount of meat," Mr. Padell says.
