NEW JUDGE ON BANDITS

Mr. Justice Goddard took his seat recently for the first time as a Judge on circuit, presiding over the Assizes at Hertford. Nothing, he said, had done more to get rid of the old form of highway rob bory than the coming of the railways, but now that people were travelling more by road certain of the criminal classes were thinking that the days of highway robbery had come again. Nearly all the criminals taking part in motor raids were young men. These were days of great trade depression, and no doubt the difficulty of getting employment had sent to crime some people who might not have taken to that course otherwise It was, of courso, no excuse, and when these criminals were brought to justice it was necessary to deal with them firmly-
