UNFAIR PACKING
1 BANANAS AND CAULIFLOWERS TWO DEFENDANTS FINED A Chinese, Wing Chong, was prosecuted by the Department of Agriculture in the Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of unfairly packing eight sacks of cauliflowers for sale. Evidence was given by F. Talbot, an inspector for the department, that ho recently inspected a quantity of defendant's cauliflowers and found that good quality vegetables had been placed on the top of the sacks, those underneath being useless and going to seed. Defendant pleaded that the packing had been done by Maori employees and that he was not personally responsible. The magistrate, Sir. W. R. McKean, imposed a fine of £2 and costs. A similar penalty was inflicted on James William Payne, who was charged with unfairly packing four cases of bananas. It was stated by the inspector that defendant had purchased more fruit than ho required, so he repacked four cases and sent them to the market. Poor bananas were placed at the bottom of the cases, with good bananas on top.
