CHINESE BANDITS' RAID ATTACK ON A TOWN GARRISON OUTNUMBERED JAPANESE OFFENSIVE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August 4, 10.35 p.m.) TOKIO, Aug. 8 Naval despatches report that 500 foot bandits and 500 mounted attacked Newchwang on Monday night. Severe fighting ensued. The garrison was outnumbered. Japanese destroyers were rushed to the scene and bluejackets were lauded to protect the town. Supported by a cruiser's gunfire the bluejackets from four destroyers are attacking the positions occupied by the bandits surrounding Newchwang. Martial law lias been proclaimed in the city.
