ACT OF VANDALISM

STATUE OF KITCHENER Perpetrated by some person unknown during Saturday night, an act of vandalism was committed in Dee Street, Invercargill, the statue Earl Kitchener in the Post Office Square receiving a coat of some black substance Over the face and tunic and other parta of the body. Evidently the vandals were in a hurry, for their workmanship did not show the signs of a finished task. In keeping with ' this theory, the other statues, those of Earl Jellicoe and Sir Joseph Ward, were not touched, and there was no apparent reason for the statue of Jjord Kitchener being singled out for this doubtful distinction. Throughout Sunday the statue • was an object of curiosity, many people trying to solve the mystery of what substance was used.
