MORE EVIDENCE HEARD SWINDELL AND LICENCES * : A REQUEST FOR SHARES BANK CLERK'S STATEMENT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright ' - (Received August 4, G. 45 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 4 Mr. Justice Halse Rogers, the Royal Commissioner appointed by the Stevens Government to investigate the allegations regarding tin hares and fruit machines, resumed the inquiry to-day. James McCarthy, bank clerk, gave evidence of his attempt to secure a licence for . greyhound racing at Waggu. lie said ."Judge" Swindell advised him to form a company with 5000 shares, to which ho agreed. Swindell also asked for 1000 shares for himself. Witness said he composed the application for the licence and Swindell added to it and the letter was typed in Swindell's office. Swindell repeated his request for 100p shares, and witness told him he would not giver him 1000 carraway seeds. Witness said he had no intention of starting-dog racing. Ho merely wanted to sell land for that purpose. Swindell had led, him to believe he was getting shares >. from country coursing companies which procured tin hare licences. John Hurley, a grazier in the Wagga district, said he accompanied McCarthy >rhen the latter visited Swindell, who wanted £IOOO or 1000 shares to ensure the issue of a tin hare licence. Witness (laid he would have nothing to do with it. He "cleared out," leaving McCarthy with Swindell. The hearing was further adjourned.
