AUSTRALIAN SILVER REGULATIONS IN FIJI EXCHANGE RATES CHARGED [from our own correspondent] SUVA, July 27 An announcement has been made by the two banks operating in Fiji, the Bank of New Zealand and the Bank of New South Wales, that on an after August 1 current rates of exchange will be charged upon all Australian silver coins in Fiji. For the past 12 months the banks in Fiji have been withdrawing all Australian silver from circulation, but they state that as it keeps on coming in in increasing quantities they have no option but to charge exchange on it.. Although the charging of exchange will cause considerable inconvenience and hardship to business people who, in rysh hours, will not be able to prevent this money from getting into their tills, it is generally realised that there is no other way of stopping the introduction of this money into the colony, which is done for the purpose of avoiding exchange. It is thought that a great deal of it is brought in by seamen wiio exchange it for Fiji notes, which they exchange at a profit on their return to Australian ports. At present rates of exchange the following are the values of Australian silver coins in Fiji currency: —Australian 2s, approximately Is 9£d; Australian Is, approximately 10£ d.
