EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTH
SEVERAL CENTRES SHAKEN SHARP TREMOR IN WELLINGTON [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION" ] WELLINGTON, "Wednesday i A Eharp earthquake occurred afc 1.17 this morning. Records at the Dominion Observatory indicate that the origin was between 80 and 90 miles distant from Wellington in a south-westerly direction. This would account for the fact that Blenheim felt the shake fairly severely. The ground during tTio earthquake was tilted to the south. BLENHEIM'S EXPERIENCE j MANY RESIDENTS AWAKENED | [by telegraph—own correspondent] BLENHEIM. Wednesday The earthquake this morning was of a fairly minor nature here. It was pronounced enough to arouse most sleepers, but caused no great concern. No damage was feared and none of any sort is reported. The report fox-warded by the local post office to the secretary of the department stated that a sharp earthquake northwest to south-east, preceded by loud rumbling, was experienced at 1.15 a.m., and it described the intensity as No. 5 on the Ross-Farrel scale. [ The shock was less severe than the shfcck on Saturday. The indications from the observatory re- > cord were that the seat of the disturbance - was about 200 miles north of Christchurch, probably in the Tasman Sea, be--5 twecn Separator Bay t. and D Urville Island.
